Redlined! Historical Redlining and Breast Cancer
While redlining has long been outlawed, its harm on neighborhoods and communities continues to be seen and felt today. Sarah Lima, PhD, MPH, is an epidemiologist who studies the connection between historically redlined communities and breast cancer. She received her doctorate from the University at Buffalo and has focused much of her research on New York cities that were redlined. Her research asserts that the structural racism set in place by redlining policies impacts present-day breast cancer survival rates and the prevalence of risk factors associated with the disease.

Advocating for a Future
I became an Advocacy Committee member and began the training needed to be efficient in advocating for the research needed to find not only a cure for breast and gynecologic cancer but ensuring that necessary resources are accessible to cancer survivors.
Access to Affordable Care
In early 2018, I became fully disabled and unable to work due to the side effects of my chemotherapy and the disease progression. I was 61 years old. I entered the five-month waiting period for Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) benefits and the 24-month waiting period for Medicare health insurance.
