While the name Death Café may seem unsettling, its true purpose quite the opposite. Death Café aims to create a safe and respectful space where the sometimes-uncomfortable topic of death and dying can be explored through open, honest conversation. The goal is to encourage meaningful conversations about mortality and to celebrate the richness of our finite lives.
Death Café takes place all over the world, and helps encourage conversations about death, and empowering people to express their own wishes for end-of-life. The open-ended discussions provide an avenue to express thoughts about one’s own life stirred up by the death of a family member… or a breast or gynecologic cancer diagnosis.
What is Death Café? Death Café provides an open, confidential, respectful, and safe space to discuss thoughts, feelings, and concerns about death and dying. The format is flexible, lightweight, and straightforward. Conversations are facilitated.
What isn’t part of Death Café?
Death Caféis not a bereavement support or grief counseling setting. Death Café doesn’t work for people who, for whatever reason, aren’t able to discuss death comfortably and openly. Death Café isn’t an opportunity to give people information about death and dying – regardless of how good or important it is. Rather, we create time to discuss death without expectations.
